This is an Opinion Essay.
It’s hard to actually define comedy. I found so many styles of comedy, that too many words would need to be used to describe it. So I’ll just select three comedic books from Amazon’s best seller list to give you a sense of what is funny.
1. Caddyshack is an iconic American comedy about a mentally-challenged veteran groundskeeper at an exclusive country club. And then there’s the gopher! The caddies are funny, the patrons are funny, but the movie earned its “classic” title in spite of itself.It is the goofiest”classic”Iknow.
In Caddyshack:The Making of a Hollywood Cinderella Story film critic for Entertainment Weekly Chris Nashawaty goes behind the scenes of the comedy, using words like deranged, interesting, revolutionary, dramatic, and surreal. He proposes that Caddyshack didn’t just happen, but its popularity did.
I remember Ellen doing stand-up in New Orleans. I wish I could recommend my favorite Ellen book, but they are all hysterical. This is her old style of humor . . . and it never ceases to be funny.
“I’ve experienced a whole lot the last few years and I have a lot to share. So I hope that you’ll take a moment to sit back, relax and enjoy the words I’ve put together for you in this book. I think you’ll find I’ve left no stone unturned, no door unopened, no window unbroken, no rug unvacuumed, no ivories untickled. What I’m saying is, let us begin, shall we?”
Seriously… I’m Kidding is a nostalgic but funny, emotional and self-effacing, just hilarious.
PRAISE FOR SERIOUSLY…I’M KIDDING
“DeGeneres’s amiably oddball riffs on everything from kale to catwalks to Jesus will make fans smile.” – People
“Whatever the topic, DeGeneres’s compulsively readable style will appeal to fans old and new.” – Publishers Weekly
“Fans will not be disappointed…[DeGeneres’s] trademark wit and openness shine through and through.” — Kirkus
Just the idea of dad jokes makes me cringe. Think of times dad has had to speak; couple that with the fact that he thinks he’s funny. The toast at your engagement party . . . the Thanksgiving dinner turkey carving . . . meeting your boyfriend for the first time. Why does Dad have to ad lib a joke? Well, they make for funny memories. In any event, 101 So Bad, They’re Good Dad Jokes will have your eyes rolling into the back of your head.
Maybe it’s because I’m approaching this age . . . but I thought this book was hilarious. Well, of course, all comedy is hilarious. His many crazy analogies. What will you do with all the free time you’ll have once you retire? LOL
Adventures in Retirement: A Humorous Journey into the Unknown World of Excess Time, Limited Responsibilities and an Uncertain Future. The title is also a perfect description of the book. “Planning for Retirement” sounds financial. Doyle prepares for retirement by resurrecting the hobbies and interests of his youth. Try to imagine the humorous situations that idea may cause! We join the author in learning:
- Retirees are ball-challenged (Golfing! Get your mind out of the gutter.)
- To have 911 on speed dial when playing board games;
- Cooking classes leads to true romance leads to cooking classes;
- What happened when the author’s cat led him to yoga (comical);
- The thrill of jumping out of an airplane without risking your life;
- Elly May Clampett is the quintessential woman; and,
- That fishing is terrifying.
